The Four Essentials – Part 1

The first two steps that aid in the memorisation and preservation of the Quran:

1- الحِفظُ
Memorisation:

The first step consists of 3 actions that the student must take in sequence written down:

‎تجويد •
You can only study the theory of Tajweed from the books, and watch YouTube videos to understand better.

If you want to master the application of these rules, then you will have to go old school, and that is by practicing with a teacher who is strict yet gentle, consistent and steadfast with you, and puts you in your place with any big or small mistake by pointing it out.

‎تلاوة •
Recitation:
Once you know some basics of tajwīd (this includes ability to read Arabic letters and words together), you must focus on reciting a small portion of the Quran daily, outside of Fardh Salāh.

Recitation is the only way you can work on your tajwīd, and recite to an expert in tilāwah so that your recitation remains free of minor and major mistakes.

‎•ترتيل
(Reciting beautifully with deliberation)

Fluency in recitation entirely depends on your practice and daily commitment with the Qurān; beginners can make excuses as to why they weren’t able to master the recitation, but an expert will always be adept at seeing through those excuses ( this, of course, is directed at all those who’ve never progressed beyond the basics of tajwīd into proper tilaāwah sessions after spending years going around in circles).

‎2- التَّثبِيتُ

Reinforcement:

The second step is also divided into 3 sections, or set of actions you need to take:

‎قراءة •
Reading:

Building a strong relationship with Qurān doesn’t stop at attaining oral fluency but it enters another level when the students delve into gaining basic understanding of Islam and for starters focus on reading up on the pillars of Islam, Qurān, Hadīth, and Seerah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Best way to do that would be to enroll in Islamic courses, and if devoid of this option the student must still learn and read up on all that he can about his religion.

‎تفسير •
Exegesis:

Focused reading on certain subjects is not only highly encouraged but considered obligatory the more one secures Qurān in his heart. Understanding the meaning behind the words Allah revealed and preserved will change the student’s outlook on this life and the afterlife permanently.

Tafsīr should be studied with those who have a strong academic background and are free of dubious claims. If no such option is available, then the student must focus on studying the authentic and abridge versions of books of tafāsīr and consult his seniors in the matter for guidance and ease.

‎تفكير •
(Linking by) Thinking:
Journey of memorization is incomplete without thinking over what is being studied and taught and linking the lessons learned with one’s daily actions.

No one will enter Paradise/Hell-fire on your behalf; no one will think on your behalf- at best others can share their thoughts and ideas with you, but you’ve to put your brain to use and get accustomed to thinking in silence and connect your thoughts with the words of Qurān (Note: this doesn’t mean you come up with your own interpretation, but rather that you align your thoughts, words, and actions with the apparent teachings of the Qurān.)

Next post will cover the remaining two points:
‎3- المُراجعَةُ
Revision

‎4- الإتقَانُ
Perfection
